What your sleep position says about you

Found on Lifestyle Yahoo, picture from BBC.com

Fetus position - A whopping 41% of participants sleep in this curled-up manner. Women are twice as likely to rest like this and it is listed as the most common position. These sleepers are said to have a tough exterior but are still sensitive and may appear to be shy but warm up quickly.

Log position - If you sleep on your side with both arms down, you are a social, easy-going person who is trusting, sometimes to the point of being gullible. The study showed 15% of people sleep like a log.

Yearner position - A close third is the side-lying position with both arms out in front of the body, with 13% of partipants sleeping like this. Yearners are noted to be open-minded and still cynical, suspicious, and stubborn about sticking to decisions once they are made.

Soldier position - These sleepers lie on their backs with arms down and kept close to the body. This 8% study is said to be reserved, quiet, without fuss, and hold themselves and others to a high standard. Soldier sleepers have a higher likelihood for snoring due to the flat-back position, which may not cause them to wake up often but may result in a less restful night's sleep.

Freefall position - Those people who lie on their bellies with arms under or wrapped around a pillow with head turned to the side, make up 7% of the population studied. Freefallers are brash, outgoing, and are very uncomfortable with criticism.

Starfish position - Sleepers who lie on their backs with arms up near their head or the pillow account for 5% of participants. These people are good listeners, helpful, and are uncomfortable being the center of attention. People who sleep in starfish position are more likely to snore and to suffer from a poor night's sleep more often.

Cleanest Countries in the World

(found on forbes.com)
Iceland is the cleanest country in the world. This may be hard to believe right now, what with the clouds of volcanic ash grounding flights across northern Europe, but according to researchers at Yale and Columbia universities, the Nordic island ranks first out of 163 countries on their Environmental Performance Index.

Researchers ranked countries based on 25 indicators, including water and air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of the environment on the health of the population. A score of 100 is excellent. Sierra Leone ranks at the bottom of the list with a score of 32. The U.S. ranks in the middle of the pack with 63.5. Similarly, Canada - which ranked 46 on the list - had a score of 66.4.

Iceland took top honors with a score of 93.5 thanks to ample clean water, lots of protected nature areas, good national health care and a plenitude of usually clean geothermal power.

The Benefits of Power Napping

So for the first time in a LONG time, I had an afternoon nap, man it was refreshing! And it also has its proven benefits

Less Stress
Research found that stress hormone levels were lower in those who took stress-reducing actions such as napping. Even a short power nap can leave you feeling refreshed, renewed, and more focused.

Increased Alertness and Productivity
Your mood, efficiency, and alertness level will improve greatly. Scientists have even proven that taking a 20-minute nap approximately eight hours after you have awaken will do more for your stamina than sleeping another 20 minutes in the morning.

Improved Memory and Learning
Daytime dozing enhances a person’s capacity to learn certain tasks. Napping protects brain circuits from overuse until those neurons can consolidate what’s been learned about a procedure.

Good for the Heart
A 30-minute siesta at least three times a week had a 37% lower risk of heart-related death.

Increased Cognitive Functioning
A 30-minute power nap increased cognitive faculties by approximately 40 percent! However, a nap must be short in order to produce maximum effectiveness. Over forty five minutes, the beneficial effects of napping disappear and it is therefore suggested to take a fifteen to thirty five minute “power nap”. This is the time necessary for the organism to rest and enables brain neurons to recuperate.

Motivation to Exercise
28 % of adolescents say they are too tired to exercise, due to sleep. You’re guaranteed to run longer, faster, more efficiently and mindfully when your body has it’s required amount of zzzz’s.

Better Health
Napping in general benefits heart functioning, hormonal maintenance, and cell repair.

Office Dress Code!

Try to be a fashionista, and follow these rules! (Found on MSN.ca)

1. Obey the rules, whether you like them or not. Dressing against office dictates won't impress the boss — or your colleagues.

2. Never show your midriff. Wear shirts of a proper length, and shun pants that ride too low.

3. Avoid revealing too much cleavage. Work is definitely not the place for it.

4. Keep your straps under wraps. Never let your bra show, and make sure your shirt is buttoned up properly.

5. And don't wear anything see-through without proper underpinnings, ever.

6. Keep your hemlines in check. Even if you have great gams, supershort skirts should be saved for evenings out or weekends. A few inches above the knee is the shortest you should go.

7. Save your flip-flops for the beach. And your sneakers for the gym. Wear a pair of simple flats for your commute instead.

8. Use your best judgment: Save slinkier styles, like lacy camisoles and strapless dresses, for the evening.

9. Try not to go too tight. The office isn't the right place to hug every curve.

10. Don't get too wacky. It's fine to express your personal style, but keep it refined. Crazy hats, over-the-top makeup, and raucous patterns or colors will make you seem too eccentric.

Earth Day is Today!

Found on Askmen.com
let's celebrate Earth Day by looking at five things you didn't know about garbage.

1- The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

In one region of the Pacific, the discarded plastic garbage bobbing around is so prevalent that it outweighs the surface zooplankton population by a factor of six to one, according to a study by the Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRF).At any rate, the AMRF believes that the whole world's oceans may contain as much as 100 million tons of plastic debris.

2- Garbage is all over Mount Everest

You would never know it by looking at the majestic, snow-white contours of the world's highest peak, but the people who spend time there are colossal slobs.
The well-trodden but challenging paths up the mountain are notoriously filthy; the most frequently encountered bit of garbage is a discarded oxygen tank, but over the years climbers have been known to discard plenty of other gear on the mountain as well.
If garbage-strewn paths weren't bad enough to spoil your leisurely hike 29,000 feet up, another frequent site will: dead people. A handful of climbers have reluctantly defied the old maxim about what goes up must come down, dying in a deep freeze at elevations too high to be retrieved safely.

3- Some garbage can live a million years or more

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that glass bottles require a million years to fully break down in a landfill; that plastic foam cups require over 500 years; aluminum cans between 200 and 500 years; plastic bags as many as 20 years, and cigarette butts as many as five years.

4- Landfill garbage pollutes the air worse than carbon dioxide

Landfills have a tendency to emit a host of toxic gases into the air, and by toxic gases we actually mean cytotoxic or carcinogenic gases, like benzene and vinyl chloride. They also leak into the surrounding soils and water sources.
Furthermore, landfills produce methane. Being lighter than air, methane works its way out of the air and into the soils or the atmosphere. Methane has a very high global warming potential
, about 12 times as high as carbon dioxide.

5- Garbage and plasma could feed the grid

The last thing you didn't know about garbage is something Dr. Louis J. Circeo at the Georgia Tech Research Institute knows everything about: using plasma to obliterate garbage.
Plasma is a set of charged particles interacting with a magnetic field, and it is hotter than the surface of the sun. At a plasma arc
gasification plant, plasma is put into contact with organic material, and -- poof! -- burns it into synthetic gas that's much cleaner than other burning processes. Inorganic material melts into useful construction materials.
Plasma
gasification is extremely efficient; according to Dr. Circeo, incinerating your run-of-the-mill ton of landfill garbage could provide the power grid with over 800 kilowatt-hours of electricity -- several times the power needed to carry out the plasma gasification in the first place.

Workplace Bullying

What are examples of bullying?

Examples include:

  • spreading malicious rumours, gossip, or innuendo that is not true
  • excluding or isolating someone socially
  • intimidating a person
  • undermining or deliberately impeding a person's work
  • physically abusing or threatening abuse
  • removing areas of responsibilities without cause
  • constantly changing work guidelines
  • establishing impossible deadlines that will set up the individual to fail
  • withholding necessary information or purposefully giving the wrong information
  • making jokes that are 'obviously offensive' by spoken word or e-mail
  • intruding on a person's privacy by pestering, spying or stalking
  • assigning unreasonable duties or workload which are unfavourable to one person (in a way that creates unnecessary pressure)
  • underwork - creating a feeling of uselessness
  • yelling or using profanity
  • criticising a person persistently or constantly
  • belittling a person's opinions
  • unwarranted (or undeserved) punishment
  • blocking applications for training, leave or promotion
  • tampering with a person's personal belongings or work equipment.
What can you do if you think you are being bullied?

If you feel that you are being bullied, discriminated against, victimized or subjected to any form of harassment:

DO

  • FIRMLY tell the person that his or her behaviour is not acceptable and ask them to stop. You can ask a supervisor or union member to be with you when you approach the person.
  • KEEP a factual journal or diary of daily events. Record:
    • The date, time and what happened in as much detail as possible
    • The names of witnesses.
    • The outcome of the event.
Remember, it is not just the character of the incidents, but the number, frequency, and especially the pattern that can reveal the bullying or harassment.
  • KEEP copies of any letters, memos, e-mails, faxes, etc., received from the person.
  • REPORT the harassment to the person identified in your workplace policy, your supervisor, or a delegated manager. If your concerns are minimized, proceed to the next level of management.

DO NOT

  • DO NOT RETALIATE. You may end up looking like the perpetrator and will most certainly cause confusion for those responsible for evaluating and responding to the situation.

Organize!

Organize Your Files Week -- The third week in April. Eileen Roth, author of
"Organizing for Dummies," recommends these quick checklists to get organized.

Use W-A-S-T-E to decide whether something's worth keeping:

* W -- Worthwhile. If the item isn't worth saving, toss it. If it is, move
on to the next four questions.
* A -- Again. Will you use this item more than once?
* S -- Somewhere else. Can you find it somewhere else or borrow it if you
need it?
* T -- Toss. Will anything happen if you throw it out? If you need it for
tax or legal reasons, for example, keep it.
* E -- Entire. Do you need the whole thing, the complete catalog, for
example, when you only want to order from one page? If not, keep what you need
and toss the rest.

Use R-E-M-O-V-E to clear off your desk:

* R -- Reduce all the distractions on your desktop, such as knickknacks or
this morning's mail. Put them on top of a file cabinet or bookcase instead.
* E -- Everyday use. Only keep things you use often on top of your desk.
* M -- Move items to the preferred side, whether you're a "righty" or
"lefty." Put the phones, pens, pencils and pads within easy reach. Put the
telephone on the opposite side so you can write with your preferred hand.
* O -- Organize like items together so you can find them easily.
* V -- View your time. Keep an organizer and clock on your desk.
* E -- Empty the center. Clear off space in the middle of your desk so you
can work on the project at hand.

Use R-A-P-I-D Response to sort mail and create stacks for each category:

* R -- Read. Magazines, newsletters, etc.
* A -- Attend. Notices and invitations for seminars, workshops, meetings.
* P -- Pay. Bills.
* I -- Important. All unknown incoming mail that needs sorting.
* D -- Dump. Mail you know you won't read or need.

Things to cover BEFORE going on a trip with a friend!

Friends, together, hitting the road! Bonding through shared experiences. Sounds
wicked-awesome, doesn't it? Aren't you already excited??

Now... Time for a reality check. Travelling with friends could be a fabulous experience,
but go with the wrong person, or choose the wrong place, and
you risk not only a trip from hell but the breakup of a friendship.

Cover these topics
1. Hitting the road in the morning. Make sure you set ground rules for when you get
up! I toured across Canada with a guy who wakes at 6am and wants to hit the road by
6:30am! Ummmm.... no!

2. Discuss food preferences in advance and decide if you want to eat together or
split up at mealtimes.

3. When your cup runneth over! Traveling and wobbly pops generally go hand in hand.
Make sure you know how your friend acts before sharing a bottle!

4. Are your personalities similar? Are you both lazy or both energetic?

5. Culture or cash register? Some people travel to shop till they drop, while others
like to take in the culture in their destination city.

6. Go with the flow or plan everything? Some people like to have an agenda, while
others like to just tour and find something cool.

7. Rooms at the inn. Do you want something cheap or extravagant?

8. Splitting up for different events. Some people can't be alone, while others like
to check things out by themselves.

Prep your BBQ!

So it may be rainy, but BBQ season is thankfully here! And unless you're a hardcore grilling machine, your BBQ has been hibernating.
So here's some tips to prep your BBQ for that 1st tantalizing steak of 2010!

1. Just like your house, your grill needs a good spring cleaning! So grab these products.
- a brass wire brush
- small pail to hold hot water
- dish soap
- venturi brush
- a 1/16” drill bit
- replacement grease cups
- spatula
- stainless steel cleaner
- fine sandpaper
Now that you've collected those items (and hopefully a cold one too!) here's how to use them!

Start with the burners. It is easier to detach the burners and take them out of the grill for a very thorough cleaning. Pass a venturi brush through the burners to snag out any blockages then brush the tops of the burners using a brass wire brush. Once the burners are cleaned, check all of the burner ports to ensure that they are opened. If some are closed with food particles you can use a 1/16” drill bit to open them

Sear plates and cooking grills should be washed with hot soapy water. Simply brush the top side of your cooking grills with a little oil to re-season them.

Hot soapy water works wonders on the cast base and sides of the grill and to remove grease splatters on the outside of the grill. For porcelain lids a thorough washing should suffice, for stainless steel lids a stainless steel cleaner should be used to remove any discoloring. Once the paint is dried, brush the cast aluminum with a little olive oil, this helps restore the luster and prevent oxidation.

Lastly, use a spatula to scrape grease from the inside of the base all the way down towards the drip pan. Remove the drip pan and give it a good washing and be sure to replace the tin foil grease catcher.

2. Inspect hoses and tubes
Visually inspect all hoses and feed tubes on your grill. Look for any crimps, scratching and or punctures, if you detect any of these, it is time to replace the hoses.

3. Do a complete Leak Test on the Grill
A leak test should be performed any time your grill has been in storage for a prolonged length of time or when you are changing any components on your grill. Watch a video on how to do it! www.napoleongrills.com

4. Check Ignition Parts
For battery ignitions it is a good idea to replace the batteries with new ones. Check all electrode leads and ensure the tips of the electrodes are clean and have no grease or rust build up on them, if they do you can use sandpaper to clean them.

And voila! A clean grilling machine, enjoy!

Tips to extend your cars life and save Moola!

Got from MSN.ca

1. The Transmission - This piece of equipment is vital to your vehicle's ability to operate properly, and vastly expensive to fix! (Mine was $3,000!) Check your owner's manual to see when the manufacturer recommends your mechanic should check to see if the transmission fluid needs topping up or replacing completely.

2. Brakes - Beyond checking the brake pad depth and thickness of the rotors or drums, the calipers themselves might need a clean-up after a salty winter. Also, brake fluid itself can get dirty if water leaks into the lines, and that means it'll need to be changed. Water degrades the brakes' ability to work properly, and can damage components internally.

3. Fuel System - Fuel is supposed to cool the pump in your tank, and with less fuel, there's less cooling, which puts greater stress on the pump. That shortens its life, which means early replacement. Also, with less fuel in the tank, you can get condensation building up, which can contaminate the fuel. At the garage, have your mechanic clean out your fuel system, which should also un-gunk the fuel injectors in your car's engine. And check that the fuel filter isn't clogged either.

4. Power Steering - Most power steering systems use a specialized fluid that doesn't take kindly to water. Having it checked, cleaned and refilled will make sure that you won't have any surprises. Check your service manual for a good idea of when to start asking about having it looked at.

5. Timing Belt - Most cars use a timing belt, which helps keep your motor running smoothly and with the correct power and fuel usage. Check your manual for the service interval. On some cars, it's as little as 85,000 km in 'severe duty' areas, while others are closer to 200,000 km. This might be one of the pricier regular maintenance items, but if it fails first, your wallet will hurt 10 times as much.

6. Wheel Alignment - Is your steering wheel not pointed straight when your car is? Take a few good whacks from curbs and potholes this year? Does your car feel like it wants to get frisky with the center divider? Chances are your wheels are out of alignment. It's a good thing to have checked once or twice a year. And it'll help with fuel economy too.

7. Air Filters - There are at least two air filters in your car. One is under the hood where it prevents dust and dirt from getting into your engine. The other is behind the dash where it prevents dust and dirt from getting into your car's cabin. Have them both changed regularly to keep everybody breathing properly. And while we're there, have your air conditioning system checked and topped up with fresh refrigerant if needed.

8. Coolant System - As antifreeze ages, it becomes acidic, and can eat its way through hoses and seals. Flushing the system with fresh coolant will help. Also, have your thermostat checked to see that it's operating properly, and replace if needed.

9. Belts and Hoses - Beyond the timing belt, there are plenty of other rubber belts and hoses around your engine that need to be checked for wear and cracking. Having them replaced at the first sign rough conditions will save you grief in the long run: $20 for a fan belt costs far less than a tow when it breaks.

10. Lights - Your vehicle's lights are its first line of defence against other drivers. Your headlights allow you to see things when it's dark, your brake lights tell people that you're slowing down, and your turn signals - providing you actually use them - let others know you're moving over or turning soon.

9 - 0 - # on your phone

From the websites I checked out, this is true, and also applies to cell phones!

If you receive a telephone call from an individual identifying himself/herself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who is conducting a test on the telephone lines, and states that to complete the test you should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up, DON'T DO IT!

If you do, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.

Apparently this scam has been originating from many jails/prison; DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

April Fools!

So I went a little crazy around the office, but I had a lot of fun! Here's some pointers for next years April Fools!
Posting a sign for people to walk around the building to another entrance is classic! Especially when it's a glass entrance, what the heck could we be painting? But someone still fell for it!
Placing a post-it note over a mouse ball will stop it from moving and have people scratching their heads!
Taping the phone button down will confuse your fellow co-workers, as when they answer the phone, it will keep ringing!
Filling up the studio with chairs will make co-workers have a nice little work-out in the morning.
Put non-offensive pictures on the BACK of photocopy paper, put it back in the tray, and see who gets the LOL Cats! Lol!
Change screensavers to co-workers 'interests'. It's a great waker-upper!
Spread the holiday cheer! Fill up an office with fake Christmas presents :)
Rearrange co-workers Letters from Adam M to Madam! Ahahaha
Hope these have given you a few good ideas!
