Let some air out of the ego balloon... There is nothing worse then listening to someone go on about how awesome they are! There's confidence... and then there's ignorance!
Don't be needy... People can smell desperation miles away and once they get a whiff, they'll be running away
Show what they have to lose if they lose you... people generally always look at how you can benefit them, but don't look at how they'd be without you
Understand their moods... if they're feeling tense, switch the topic for a few minutes to something they enjoy so they can relax
Always reiterate the others statement... this way it will appear that you've fully heard them out, then add your two cents afterward
